Tutorial how to Set Up BlackBerry as a Modem Via an IP Desktop Manager

Since the upgrade to version 5.0.1, now we can configure our BlackBerry as a modem. This guide is based on setting up your BlackBerry as a modem over IP, using the new version of Desktop Manager, known as DM, for the purposes of this guide.

VERY IMPORTANT: * The setting up your Blackberry as a modem can incur large costs, it depends on your cellular carrier and your BlackBerry service plan. We recommend that you check with your provider before using the BlackBerry as a modem.

We will try to make this as simple and straightforward as possible, walking step by step. What you need for this tutorial:

1. BlackBerry (to say the obvious)
2. Desktop Manager, version 5.0.1 (or higher)
3. USB Cable

First step (installation):
Use the USB cable to connect the device to your PC. If connected, and run the correct version of the DM, the main screen should look like this:

Step Two:
Click on the icon labeled “Set modem as IP, which will take you to the next screen, where the real work begins. On this screen you will see two options. On the left, you have the connection options on the right, the Connect to the Internet. Come on, click the connection settings, and start configuring.

Third Step (Configuration and connection):
After you have clicked on the “Connection Settings” will now have a window on the screen where you can enter the settings to configure your connection IP. In “Connection Profile”, you will find a menu with a list of potential carriers. Pick one that applies to you. You also have the option of configuring a custom profile. If you do leave the connection open and close, check the box at the bottom of the window labeled “Keep an open Modem IP connection after the BlackBerry Desktop Manager is closed”

* If you are using an unlocked phone in an operator other than the defaults for the original media profiles

If you are simply going to stick with the plan from your operator, select the appropriate network and click “OK.” Ask your operator for information on multiple user names and passwords for different types of access.

Now that you have set the profile to use for IP connection, the next step is to connect. Come on, click “Internet Connect” to connect. When you click the button to connect, you are prompted with a warning about using your device as a modem, and fees associated with it, we will click “Continue.” Desktop Manager will now open a connection to the Internet through your BlackBerry. The window displays the active connection in the bottom left and the login window with an overlap time display connected, and data sent and received, with a total at the bottom. Click the Disconnect button to end the session. Now set up your BlackBerry as a modem to use IP! Enjoy
